How to check a mover is licensed in Iowa
Every moving company in the country says it is licensed and insured. The phrase appears on the website of companies that are and companies that are not, and it means nothing until somebody checks it.
Checking it takes about ten minutes and costs nothing. Iowa happens to be a good state to do this in, because it regulates household goods moving inside the state under its own statute rather than leaving it entirely to the federal system.
The federal lookup, for any mover crossing a state line
Interstate movers operate under federal authority, and the record is public. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration runs the SAFER Company Snapshot at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. It is free, it needs no login, and it searches by USDOT number, MC number or company name.
What comes back is the legal name and any trading name, the physical address on file, the number of power units and drivers, the operating status, and the safety and inspection history. Two fields matter most. Operating status should be active rather than out of service. And a carrier authorized to move household goods for hire across state lines will show that authority explicitly.
Compare the address on the snapshot against the address on the quote. A mismatch is not automatically a problem, since companies move, but it is a question worth asking.
The Iowa lookup, for a move that starts and ends in the state
A move from Ankeny to Waukee never leaves Iowa, so federal interstate authority is not the relevant permission. Iowa Code chapter 325A governs for-hire intrastate motor carriers, and household goods movers sit inside it.
The requirement that matters to you as a customer is the tariff. Under the statute, a motor carrier of household goods cannot transport personal effects or property between points within Iowa until its tariff has been filed, posted and approved by the department, and once it is approved the carrier may not charge, demand or collect more or less than the rates in it. Changing a tariff requires thirty days' notice to the department and to the public.
The Iowa DOT Office of Motor Carrier Services holds those records and will confirm a carrier's status. The published contact is 515-237-3268 and omcs@iowadot.us. Asking is unremarkable and they are used to the question.
Why this makes published price lists suspicious rather than reassuring
The tariff rule has a consequence that surprises people. A rate published on a website is not the thing you will be charged unless it matches an approved filing, and the same figure cannot be right for a studio in Beaverdale and a five-bedroom in Waukee.
So a mover who talks about writing you an estimate against your actual job is describing the system as it works, not dodging the question. A mover who will commit to a firm total over the phone without seeing the house, on the other hand, has either priced in a large margin for being wrong or intends to revise it later.

The things people mistake for a license
Several credentials get presented as proof of licensing and are not. None of them are bad, and none of them are the thing you were checking.
- A business registration with the Iowa Secretary of State means the company exists, not that it may move household goods
- A membership badge from a trade association is a subscription
- A Better Business Bureau listing is a complaint record, useful on its own terms
- A certificate of insurance proves coverage on the date it was issued, not operating authority
- A USDOT number alone proves registration, not that the authority behind it is active
What to do if the answer is no
If a company cannot produce a USDOT number, or the snapshot comes back out of service, or the Iowa DOT has no record of an intrastate permit, the decision is simple: hire somebody else. There are enough movers in the metro that you do not need to take the risk.
If you have already paid a deposit, the Iowa Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division takes complaints about Iowa businesses, and the FMCSA takes complaints about interstate household goods carriers. Both are worth doing even when you do not expect the money back, because a complaint record is how the next person finds out.
